Richard, Your question is very broad. Different approaches are appropriate for different scales. On your local host, try the HOWTOs and mini-HOWTOs, the locate command, and grep in a specific subdirectory. External to your location a Web search tool (e.g., the ubiquitous Google or the non-tracking duckduckgo and lxquick). There are broad Web fora such as linuxquestions.org and stackexchange.org.
