Russ, I just replied to two others, sorry for the mess, But I will try to do a short version of it.
According to HughesNet (HN) the HN modem is supposed to hand out up to 5 IP addresses in the 192.268.0.x subnet. If I plug a router (or Linux machine for that matter) into the HN modem, I obtain a IP address assignment in the 100.119.x.x range, in some cases it has been 100.119.170.x and others 100.119.169.x but it is a routable address. This does not follow what the documentation says should happen, the field guy that was here was not sure about it but he saw that the web browser on a computer plugged into the non HN modem was able to reach any URL that was given a machine plugged into the router ( a Netgear running OpenWRT) which was talking on it's WAN port to the HN modem. After many calls to HughesNet I got the impression that if it was not a windows box they were off in the weeds (typical of most of them) Anyhow the whole mess is up and running, it has a 10GB cap on it and they want BIG money to get it high enough to watch a few movies per month. I am trying to see if I can get a WISP to work with me to get data down in this hole. I think I can put a radio up on a ridge up about 1000ft distant and about 150 ft above the house, if it can talk to a WISP point of presence I will get me 1000ft of fibre and run it down the hill to the house and get rid of HN. HN was already here, as the owner of the house knew nothing about this sort of thing, but radio is something I have been doing for a long time I used to get paid well to do the digital equivalent of "can you hear me now". It appears that I am too far away from the DSLAM to get any type of DSL, and cable shines in its absence. But the price for the place was right, just have to work out a good network connection, it may be a bit trying but a learning process too. Also I do not hear any trains, I-5, or boats on the river, nor other ind- ustrial noise, just country quiet and noises, yess!!!
