BTW, I keep spares of the main drives I use a lot,
ready to install a restore on. 

I use dd to copy the first megabyte or so of the raw drives being
backed up onto a file on the backup drive.  I also save the output
of df , and fdisk -l , for every backup image.  A drop in the bucket
compared to the rest of the backup, saving much time during restore.
