The thing with rolling releases, in my opinion, is that they're pretty good at making sure you have a fairly recently libblah.so.3, but they have real problems when something core is changed -- like going from System V init scripts to systemd, or switching base filesystems from ext4 to zfs/btrfs. I suspect you *could* do those upgrades in place, but I'd guess that the time commitment would be huge.

All of which isn't to say that I look forward to upgrading to the newest CentOS, Debian, or Ubuntu release -- but knowing that I'll have to do it has, over the years, helped me understand clearly what data I need to roll forward and what I can jettison.
