August 6 2012, Sunday night at 10 pm, two auditoriums at OMSI were
jammed with (1000?) people watching the live feed from JPL of the
landing of the Mars Science Laboratory in Gale crater. Yells,
whoopie, hugs, pandemonium!

Brought to you by Linux. Jet Propulsion Laboratory has vast
compute resources running Linux, which were used to design and
model the spacecraft and the landing system before launch. On
landing day, they were reconfigured to serve video to the globe,
by far the highest web traffic NASA has ever seen. At OSCON, I
talked to the fellow who designed and managed the reconfiguration.

World domination is for wusses. We own the solar system!
