OK, I am booted to the Xubuntu 14.04.1 live DVD. I shows icons on the desktop for the various drives and I mounted the one where the OS is located (sdb1). With the file manager I can see the /boot folder. And I know for certain that this is the right drive and partition because a long time ago Keith created /b1 and /b2 at the Clinic and I never bothered to remove them, and there they are.
With sdb1 mounted I navigated to it with a terminal and used ls to confirm that I am in the root of my kaput system. My understanding is that now I should do dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc, but I think I'm supposed to chroot into the broken system before running that command, and I don't know how to use chroot, although I suspect that I'm about to learn.
