My thinking exactly. But how to fix it eludes me.

The reason I wanted to restart X is because logging out and back in
again, while it restarts X, ialso terminates all programs that I have
running at the moment.

I also discovered something else that may be germane. Last time there
was screen corruption I took a screenshot of a program that has a dark
background where the lines were very visible. After rebooting to a clean
screen I opened the screenshot and it was completely clean and normal.

I'm off to see if I can find a bug report about this, or maybe file
one. But if I file a bug report I am handicapped by the fact that I
cannot post a screenshot of the corruption. I also cannot demonstrate
it on demand, since I don't know what triggers it.
