This involves a System76 bonobo Extreme with GeForce GTX 765m that was
new early last December. At that time i installed Xubuntu 13.10 and the
video worked fine. The GTX 765M is one of those fancy cards that uses
intel video on the CPU unless the user does something that requires
high speed video, and then the nVidia chip kicks in. however, i let
Xubuntu just install the default nouveau driver, and it worked fine for
my needs.

A couple of weeks ago i did a dist-upgrade to Xubuntu 14.04.1, and it
turned out to be a disaster - so bad that at the moment it will not
even boot. This evening i tried a fresh install of 14.04.1 and it
came up at 640 x 480 - hopelessly unusable. i reinstalled a second
time, but got the same results.

This is weird. Xubuntu 13.10 had no problem with the GTX 765M, and it
continued to work at its normal 1920 x 1080 after the dist-upgrade, but
a fresh install of a later release can't find proper drivers for it?
