Over the last few weeks, my offsite virtual server has been hammered
with web spider queries from Baidu (they ignore robots.txt), robot
attacks looking for phpMyAdmin exploits, etc., driving the load
average as high as 50. I spent a few hours looking over the
previous week's apache access logs, and adding the most troublesome
IP addresses to iptables. Scorched earth - if an ip address is
demon-ridden today, it may also be infested in the future. Plenty
of other people to serve.

My load average has dropped from 50 to less than one, but being a
virtual, it is still slow because the neighbors are also being
attacked. I may need to move to a faster hosting service. Sigh.
