Jim,

   After writing that message I booted the laptop (to build and install
Slackware patched packages) and checked the date because I had recently
upgraded ntpd and uncommented the default time servers in the new
/etc/ntp.conf file. That seems to have fixed the problem.

   The appropriate assumption is that somehow I mis-configured ntp on that
one host. Seems that the latest update fixed it. However, I will check again
tomorrow morning. If the time's still correct I'll not bring the laptop to
the clinic, but will show up to see if there's something useful I can
contribute.
