I used to use
mail
xmail
sendmail
depending on the originating OS, to send text messages to my email
address ... never could get the phone service provider to guarantee
email delivery in less than 3 days. Before that, I used to send short
text messages to my pager ... I used a combination of 'sh', Expect (part
of Tcl/Tk), and cu, to send to the pager.
