From my reading of what you’re doing, you’re wanting postfix to pass auth 
queries to dovecot, and if dovecot says ok, you allow somebody to send 
authenticated mail.

When you upgraded dovecot, did you also upgrade postfix? There may be some 
additional (or changed) arguments that go with either a newer version of 
postfix or dovecot.

Depending on your system, you may need to build postfix with dovecot support to 
be able to set the smtp_sasl_type.
