The Open Source Edition provided by Ubuntu does not include the extension pack that Oracle provides for USB compatibility. You need to install the Oracle Virtualbox and then install the Extension pack: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/virtualbox/downloads/index.html#extpack to get the USB to work. (Really) Don't think you can install the Extension pack on top of Ubuntu's install of the Open Source Edition, but maybe if the versions match?
