It arrove today. I hate rebooting so I installed it live (a bit tricky,
but I succeeded). I inserted a movie DVD, which was immediately
recognized, mounted it, and proceeded to copy the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS
files to my hard disk. Not a single hiccup. 

Later I'll see what happens if I try Blu-ray discs, including triple
layer discs. That will have to wait until I get some blank triple-layer
discs. For now, problem solved.
