I have had about 3 lockups on my new (used) Lenovo L420. The symptoms are
that the system freezes with no responses to either the mouse or the
keyboard. in the most recent incident I was viewing the list of installed
sw in the Ubuntu software GUI. This time I waited for 29 minutes before
pressing the power switch. During that time I saw no signs of life-the
time display text in the menu bar did not change. After restarting, before
the login screen appeared there were a number of lines of text at the top
of the screen which went by to fast to read. On a more normal boot two
lines appear, also too brief to read. I took a video of the two lines.
They say
"? is not active yet, using direct activation during sysinit
 /???/??gg??/ubuntu--root:clean,237000/7536640 files, 3272140/39119936
blocks"
I think I got most of that right; video is hard to read.

Immediately on rebooting after the crash I saved the sys.log file. The
lines just before and just after the 29 minute break are:

A web search turned up the following.

http://askubuntu.com/questions/760731/lenovo-thinkpad-11e-randomly-freezes-on-ubuntu-16-04

I am planning to run a memory check. Are there any other diagnostics which
might be useful? The os is ubuntu 16.04, 8G ram, hard drive is 128G SSD,
swap is turned off. Fresh, recent install of os. uname -r yields
4.4.0-24-generic

Thanks,
-Denis
