Thanks everybody. I now have synaptic, and Gnome-software is hidden. On my desktop running 14.04 the equivalent of Gnome-software uses the same icon as Gnome-software, but it works. Why is it that Ubuntu seems to have the philosophy "If it ain't broke, fix it 'till it is."?
