Guess what? Ubuntu repaired itself. I did nothing. But suddenly /mnt
appears properly with ls -la, and Thunar displays the filesystem again.
I don't know how this happened, but I'm not questioning it. 

Whew! Hooray!

Now on to trying to figure out rsync.
