I forgot to mention one issue id you are using newer distribution such as Ubuntu 16.04 - they will not load unsigned kernel modules.
You have two options to load it (sorted by "betterness" not by ease of use) 1. Sign the compiled kernel module before installing it and add your signing key to EFI fimware. This is correct way as it will not open your PC to loading unsigned kernel modules. Please google signing kernel modules up for your distribution of choice. 2.
