I've a question about entries in yesterday's mail log for those of you who
professionally administer mail servers running postfix.

One reason postfix rejects incoming mail is a server configuration error
(the originating server, if I'm not mistaken). Many of these messages come
from servers hosting mail lists to which I'm subscribed and I don't
understand why some messages are received and others rejected.

Here's a redacted list of originating servers from yesterday's log:

Client host rejected: Server configuration error (total: 477)
           34 hypatia.math.ethz.ch
           31 google.com
           31 sailthru.com
           27 postgresql.org
           19 linkedin.com
           14 sqlite.org
            7 memphis.edu
            4 osuosl.org
            1 nytimes.com

The first domain hosts the R maillist, the third a message from the
Washington Post, the seventh the LyX/LaTeX maillist; the others are
similarly legitimate originators. Unless someone has spoofed these domain
names when sending spam, I presume.

Please inform me about what might cause these messages to be rejected.

Rich
