Actually, it ought to be able to do both, even with the same radio, but
both ap-mode and station-mode interfaces need to be on the same channel
(radios can only be tuned to once channel at a time).  It might be
slightly less stable.  Also, if the other laptop can do 5GHz instead of
2.4GHz, then that should work without any trouble at all.

I'm biased though.  To me, access points with OpenWrt/LEDE[1] are like
swiss-army knives.  I like to play with all the attachments.

[1] LEDE, in case anyone is wondering, is a recent fork/reboot of the
    OpenWrt project, since early May, where most of the former OpenWrt
    developers are devoting most of their energy.  They are pretty much
    synonymous, because it is mostly the same people, but they do have a
    different name and might or might not re-merge in the next few
    months.
