There are two partitions owned by root that have 777 permissions so I can write to them: /opt and /tmp. The former is where external, third-party applications reside. Now and then when I try to download a new version of an application to /opt I cannot because the permissions have reverted to the default, 755.
I fix this so I can download the file and all is well for a while. Until it isn't. Not being aware of what I might have done that caused the permissions to revert I would like to learn if there is some way to log when and why the permissions change. While returning the perms to 777 is easy it's annoying to have to do this unexpectedly. Ideas wanted.
