You are correct. The only connection to the monitor I am using is the dvi port. That is all that I have ever used, and the cable has not been moved. The problem of fat icons I assumed was due to a decreased resolution (true) and I called it vga (wrong). But the immediate problem is that I cannot get the menu on the monitor to display now that it is set to hdmi. I would have expected that the menu would display regardless of what mode is set. Could this be a fault in the monitor? Time to search for the monitor manual to see how to reset it to dvi. Power off did not cure it.
Random button pushing has only made my problem worse.
