There has been some great feedback on this question already and I can
only add a few points:

1. Don't limit yourself to "Linux" given that nearly every modern
technology bumps into GNU/Linux in some way already.

2. The points like help desk are very good because in-the-trenches
insights are very, very helpful for... coding. I sincerely wish every
FreeNAS developer (FreeBSD-based) had spent a year or more in the
trenches before they wrote a single line of code.

3. If you're greedy: Look at the most in-demand projects and dive into
them. Wordpress and OpenStack come to mind. They are insanely-contrived
and leave countless opportunities for legions of people. Find some
single component that interests you and find a way to help. Demonstrate
value and then dismissively mention you are considering full-time work.
If you can do that one thing... others will be considered added benefits.

Yes, I am bit cynical on all this because the tools should be
well-written, intuitive and not require extensive specialized experience
to make them work... but, they are and do.

Michael
