I've been watching this thread and I think the best solution, which someone else already mentioned, is using some sort of external storage to make the xfer. Even if you manage to get networking up and running you still have the challenge of setting up an ftp server on the Linux box. With knowledge none of it's terribly difficult, but if it's the data you care about I'd recommend using external storage.
