Ed, This would wipe out the existing portable in known_host. I think the problem is more basic. While the laptop has ed25519 and ecdsa private/public keys in /etc/ssh/, it does not have the private and public id_ed25519 in ~/.ssh/. I believe that I need to run ssh-keygen on the laptop (with the same passphrase as used on the server and other laptop), then run ssh-copy-id to copy the public key on the server.
