Ronald,

Business checks are no problem: there's a template for 3-part checks on
letter-size paper that I'm modifying for my needs. Personal checks, the
standard 6" x 2-3/4", I don't know because I buy them 4 boxes at a time.

Printing checks on plain paper (or special "check" paper) might not work
because the bank routing, account, and check numbers are printed in a
magnetic ink readable by scanners at the bank teller's window. Most also
have microprinting for security purposes. I doubt printers can do magnetic
ink on one line or the microprinting; but I may be totally wrong. :-)

Your bank may have generic checks they'll give you. The "book" usually
have 10 checks and are for the use of new account holders.
