John,

   Run passwd as root (sudo, for you I believe) and specify the user whose
password you're changing.

   You can also use chpasswd (man 8 chpasswd) -- as root -- using,
chpasswe jjj:<newpassword>.

   Others will correct my advice if I've lead you down the wrong path.
