Search engines aren't intelligent enough. They can retrieve individual posts with a keyword. They will likely return a link if the keyword is in the group's or list's name/title. But will give no hint that a particular topic is "on topic". For example if one was looking for information on "Debian", "Ubuntu", or "Comcast", I know of no search engine that would return "lists.pdxlinux.org".
