My lmgtfy link was not well received. I misread the situation here,
and for that I apologize.

I will, however, take the time to explain was I was doing, because I
think it goes to the heart of how a list like this functions.

The question in the original post was specific:

> What's the latest and best way to package software as an RPM?

I'm not inexperienced in this topic. As Galen pointed out, I have some
older pages on my personal web site that deal with building RPMs, but
they're old and unlikely to reflect today's best practices. I do know
that rpm-building is a widely discussed topic, and several good
writers have assembled instructions.

I also know that there's no quick answer to the question of the
finding the latest and best way to package software as an RPM; a good
answer would be article-length at least. The way I'd go about looking
for answer is to search the internet for "build rpm" or something
similar.

Indeed, when I did that, the first several results from Google looked
quite promising.

I assumed, I guess, that the original poster knew that he was asking a
question with a complex answer. I also assumed he'd know that list
members would be unlikely to take the time to write a full-length
technical article by way of response. Pointing him to existing web
resources was what I considered the shortest route to him finding his
answer.
