Re VLC, I love it also, but the only way it can 'convert' a file is to record it as you are playing it. It will work, but it will be slow, taking as long as it take to play the movie. Sometimes that is the only way to rip and encode a file, but there are usually better alternatives. One of my favorite GUI apps is MKVMerge, mostly because it is astonishingly fast. Note that 'merge' is not all that it can do. It can also add subtitles to the same file, and many other things. I have never tried it with a MPEG2 file, however.
