My writing with LaTeX/LyX, emacs, and joe uses the ispell (international spelling dictionary) and when I insert (or add) a new word and it's done checking the document I'm asked if I want to save the added/inserted words in the dictionary. This linux-y approach is more user-oriented than the M$ approach of LO. Glad you got it figured out.
