In addition to setting nohup when a process (such as compiling Qt5 which can take 11-12 hours on a dual-core, older machine such as this i686 AMD Athlon II X2 255 Processor AuthenticAMD) or running the shell command, I just learned a third way and share it in case others find it useful.
I started the qt5.Slackbuild script about 3:00pm today; it will work through the night until completion so I went looking for a solution. Here it is: Press Ctrl-Z to pause the program. $ [1] + Stopped myprogram $ disown -h %1 $ bg 1 [1]+ myprogram & $ logout (or follow your normal logout process from the X Window System).
