I do know some of the menu items are labeled different between the Windows
and Linux versions (i.e. Settings/Preferences/Options). This gets confusing
when looking for help from a search engine as they typically give a
response suitable for Windows users. However, as far as how many messages
are displayed, in my Thunderbird I have the folders list on the left then a
split window with the message list on the top and the "Message Pane" on the
bottom.
Yep. That's what I have, too.
You can enable/disable the Message Pane with F8.
That works, but I don't know what I'd use it for.
You can adjust the
size of the message pane, which determines how many messages are shown in
the list simply by putting your mouse over the division between the message
list and the Message Pane and dragging it up or down as desired.
That works, but it won't shrink below 8 messages in the pane.
As far as changing the over all layout options, View>Layout gives you a
variety of options to choose from.
Yep. Those are there and they work. They don't change anything I want to
change, though.

Thanks for the reply. Some day I might go to the trouble of trying the
.css approach.
