I've been using a USB foot pedal since 2012. It has always worked fine.
I use it on a Windows 10 virtual machine. It worked fine until last
week. lsusb sees the device, ID 05f3:00ff PI Engineering, Inc. VEC
Footpedal. Is there a similar command for Win10? The transcription
software I use no longer recognizes it. I spoke with tech support at the
software vendor. He said that the model foot pedal I use is out of date
and I should upgrade from version 1 to version 2 or 3. The only thing I
can think of is that some software upgrade of Win10 did something to
make it not see this foot pedal.
My wife has a computer that runs Win7. I installed a version of Express
Scribe on it, and it works fine. I still have a virtual Win7, and
installed Express Scribe on it. Same problem as with my virtual Win10.
Looking at the virtual Win7 machine settings for USB shows the VEC USB
Footpedal [0100] as installed. The virtual machine settings of USB on my
Win10 virtual machine looks the same.
I have a hard time believing that a new pedal would make any difference.
I'm wondering if getting the latest version of Windows would make any
difference. Looks like Win11 would cost me $120. A new footpedal would
be cost $65.
For the time being, I can use my wife's machine, but I'd rather not.
The other alternative, and actually my first preference, is to find
Linux transcription software. My first attempt at that turns up a lot of
AI speech to text stuff. That's not useful for me. I will keep looking.
