I agree that Wordpress can be difficult to use, I've never used it myself but have had to help people figure out a problem here or there and it can be confusing, due to all the plugins, pre-configured templates from the hosting provider, etc.

It sounds like you might be sticking with it, but if you go looking, I think the Bonfire Network looks pretty interesting.  It has a few different deployment configurations, and the "community" one sounds right for your use case. https://bonfirenetworks.org/app/community/

The bonus is that it implements ActivityPub, so people anywhere on Mastodon, frendica, etc can integrate from accounts they already use.
