Hi,

I'm trying to install Debian 13 on an old Free Geek mini tower, and I'm encountering a problem when the installer tries to mount the install media.

target system
-------------
old Dell Optiplex 7010 with an i3 (w CDROM drive but no disc installed)
BIOS configured for UEFI
1 GB USB flash drive
debian-13.1.0-amd64-netinst.iso (SHA256 verified)

I copied the iso file to the flash drive with the following command:
sudo dd if=debian-13.1.0-amd64-netinst.iso of=/dev/sda bs=16M status=progress oflag=sync

After booting from the USB drive, I perform the following steps:
select install type: graphical
select language: English
select location: United States
config keyboard: American English

After the keyboard configuration, I come to the Detect and mount installation media page. It says: "Your installation media couldn't be mounted. When installing from CD-ROM, this probably means that the disk was not in the drive. If so you can insert it and try again." Trying again does not help.

Looking at virtual console 4(?), I see the following messages:
cdrom-detect: Searching for Debian installation media...
cdrom-detect: Devices: '/dev/sr0'
kernel: [ (timestamp)] /dev/sr0: Can't open blockdev
cdrom-detect: CD-ROM mount failed: device=/dev/sr0 fstype=iso9660
cdrom-detect: CD-ROM mount failed: device=/dev/sda fstype=iso9660
cdrom-detect: CD-ROM mount failed: device=/dev/sda fstype=vfat

I get similar results when I use the regular(non-graphical) installer.

My searches regarding the problem have not been helpful. What am I doing wrong? I'm sure many people use the netinstall image, so I'm puzzled as to why I'm encountering an issue.

I will note that I get an error from the BIOS or UEFI when booting. It says "Failed to open \EFI\BOOT\Failed to load image start_image() returned Fot Found, ...". I have been disregarding this particular error message, as the Debian installer seems to boot successfully despite the error message.

thanks,
galen
