No LAN host has a firewall configured, other than any Slackware installation
default.

I'd check your network routing to ensure SSH traffic is permitted to go to
both machines, and to make sure you have no rules redirecting all traffic
on that port to one machine.

As I wrote, the laptop connects to the desktop; it's only the other
direction that's not working. Neither computer is external to the LAN.
