I do realize that this may be smart Alec type comment - after the fact, and
not really helpful right now. It may help you the next time.

If you are using BTRFS for /home you could easily create
hourly/daily/weekly/... snapshot /home schedule with snapper.

Some distros come with btrfs by defaut, some may be trivially configured at
install.

It sure saved my bacon bunch of times and it is maintenance free. And, if
you do regular backups, you could use newest snapshot to avoid open file
coruption.
