we use smpeg to play .mpg's
and a .dat to .mpg converter to play .dat's
i forgot the program's name though :),
maybe we can ask sir mike maravillo (yoohoo).

there is are commercial software which can directly play .dat's

if anyone have a better open source solution, please share.
... and if you have cool mpg's please share too.
