You need to patch a pristine kernel - one in which red hat has not added any
of their patch. If you have the SRPMS of red hat you can use the src.rpm
kernel and modify the spec file and add the kernel patch BEFORE the other
patches, then do an "rpm -bp kernel.spec" This might intruduce other errors
though and it will be a matter of commenting out the other stuff from the
spec file. IOW trial and error.
Or you can just use the tar.bz2 kernel from src.rpm; patch that instead...
less trouble and less adventure.
