may i suggest you use the latest rpm build: wine-20001002-1mdk.rpm at
http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/Emulators.html
and see if it still doesn't work.

I remember installing wine-2000xxxx-xxxxx, (minor version forgotten), a few
months ago using the same problematic S3 Trio 3D/2x card under Mandrake 7.0
and it worked well.
Just a reminder - wine is still under heavy development so YMMV.
