you could try other mailers... like cyrus, instead of procmail or the
standard local mailers which goes through /etc/passwd to check if there is
a user locally..

cyrus got its own list of virtual users, thus bypassing the 16bit UID
limit.

cyrus even got a neat imap daemon...
