upgrading from 2.2.x to 2.4.x is a pain. you need to have newer
version of nearly everything in your system from the libraries
loaders, compilers, tons of apps that need to upgraded. i suggest
you get a distro that bundles the 2.4.0 kernel.
i was not able to compile the 2.4.x kernel successfully with the new
glibc yet.
