the swap is only used in time you run out of physical memory. you really
do not need to increase swap space if ever you upgrade your main memory.
you can even live without swap, that is, if you've got a very big ram. :)
before, when 32MB is the norm for servers, our swap space are at 48MB
or around 150% of the available physical memory. Today, we dropped the
swap size to just around 80% to 90% .
since you're using RH4.2 , and I assume it's running 2.0.x kernel, don't
forget to update the append statement, mem=xxx (where xxx is your memory
size in MB) on your kernel loader for it to recognize the correct memory
size.
