I think there is a bit of a mix-up. The US$1000 Borland Kylix is
comparable to Delphi 5 Enterprise. It is not meant to be a database
backend but a general-purpose Rapid Application Development (RAD)
tool comparable to Visual Basic and PowerBuilder. It brings the
the "drag-and-drop" UI style development to KDE and GNOME plus provide
native ODBC-like interfaces to Oracle,Sybase,Interbase.
It would allow Windows developers to easily port their Delphi programs
directly into Linux. Kylix removes the excuse of traditional corporate
software development from staying away from Linux because of the lack of
development tools such as Powerbuilder, Visual Basic, Oracle Forms, etc.
There will be a GPLed version of Kylix but most likely without the
native interfaces to the databases. However, it would generate native
Linux binaries that utilize the KDE/GNOME GUI.
