I got the XFree86-4.0.2-build-4 SRPMS from RawHide 1.0 and tried building
them. I broke a whole lot of stuff in the process (what with wanting to
enable SSE optimizations, etc) but eventually got a binary.

Anyway, after all my efforts, I get something like this in the
XFree86.log:

...
(0): [drm] created "tdfx" driver at busid "PCI:1:0:0"
(0): [drm] added 4096 byte SAREA at 0xce377000
(0): [drm] mapped SAREA 0xce377000 to 0x40015000
(0): [drm] framebuffer handle = 0xe2000000
(0): [drm] added 1 reserved context for kernel
...

so apparently I built the stuff correctly, also the Direct Rendering
Manager is fine, I can see "XFree86-DRI" in my xdpyinfo output. However,
*all* my OpenGL test programs are using the wretched Mesa Indirect
renderer! I read the DRI Users Guide and got an error like this:

...
$ export LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose
$ gears
libGL: trying /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/dri/tdfx_dri.so
libGL error: dlopen failed: /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/dri/tdfx_dri.so: cannot
open shared object file: No such file or directory
libGL: trying /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/dri/tdfx_dri.so
libGL error: dlopen failed: /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/dri/tdfx_dri.so: cannot
open shared object file: No such file or directory
...

so apparently my DRI driver ain't there (the tdfx driver is just for
2D). Grr!! worst part is, linux.3dfx.com no longer exists thanks to the
bankruptcy of that company. So I have nowhere else to go for working 3dfx
binaries.

I've rebuilt this thing about 3 times already (at 40 minutes per build, a
majorly distracting among of time) but I'm still met with failure. Funny
thing is, there *are* DRI drivers in /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/dri for the
Matrox, Intel i810, and some other cards.. except mine!!
