I think I encountered this before when I installed Zope as root. 
IIRC, when Zope starts to run as "nobody" it doesn't have write 
access to the var folder where it creates the pid file. Either 
that, or because there was an existing pid file. 

To solve the problem (if memory serves), either give the user 
Zope runs as, rights to that var folder, or delete an unwanted 
existing pid file.
