First you have to clarify what you mean by Linux and Windows understanding
each other. You can go from something as "understandable" as TCP/IP, to
something as "un-understandable" as say, using Linux loadable modules as
Windows drivers or vice versa.

Kidding aside, though, Linux and Windows understand each other to
tolerable levels when using TCP/IP. Windows web clients can view web sites
hosted on web servers using Linux. FTP works fine, too.

You're probably interested in Samba or SMB, though. That's the protocol
that Microsoft "Networking" uses for file and printer sharing. For that
you'd probably like to check the Samba website <http://www.samba.org/> for
the Linux side of things. HOWTOs in <http://www.linuxdoc.org/> should be
helpful, too.

It's pretty straightforward when you get it working, Samba, I mean. You
can share files both ways. The Samba client can access fileshares on a
Windows computer, and the Samba server is just great. :-)

There are other ways to make Windows talk to Linux, of course, including
ODBC where an ODBC driver on a Windows client can access data on a
database server running on top of Linux. PostgreSQL and MySQL, popular
database servers for Linux, have ODBC drivers available that work pretty
well. I prefer the way PostgreSQL and its ODBC driver work, but feel free
to check both out for yourself. And you're not even limited to just these
two. :-)
