Mark, Thanks for the neat script idea. I'd been thinking about how to check the link before fetching and sending mail and had forgotten that ping returns a success status. This also works with name addresses like 'mysite.com' instead of the numeric ip address, if you have the entry in your hosts list or you can reach a DNS server. But hangs on the DNS lookup otherwise.
