Has anyone else here tried the Soldier of Fortune game demo for linux?
or the whole game?
SoF won the Editor's choice for Best Linux Game of the Year in the Linux
Journal Editor's Choice for 2000.
Whilst it runs on a Quake II engine, it's best feature is its very
detailed depiction of the effects of firearms on the human body. Your
opponents can wounded in various parts of the body and dismemberment of
limbs is shown in very graphic detail.
It also supports network play.
the Linux port of SoF was done by Loki software
(http://www.lokigames.com) and requires:
Linux kernel version 2.2.X
Pentium II with 3D accelerator card (see below)
32 MB RAM required (64 MB recommended)
Video card capable of 640x480 resolution
XFree86 3.3.5 or newer at 16bpp
OSS compatible sound card
Hard disk with at least 150 MB of space
It ran reasonably well on my Toshiba Satellite 1605cds (AMD K6-2 450
MHz, ATI Rage LT Pro w/ 4 Mb video RAM), with 96 MB of memory. My only
complaint was that sometimes, the textures would be rendered as
multicolored specks, no doubt due to the low memory of the video card.
If you've got the requisite hardware, it's worth checking out..
